The typing pool, in which Ruth paddled away her mornings, was given the challenge to pare the community’s songbook. It had grown bloated in recent years; what began as a pamphlet now ran more than three hundred pages, illustrated and clothbound and indexed by both title and first verse. Morning Songs, Autumn Songs, Songs for Rainy Days, Whitsuntide Songs, Hiking Songs. The most recent edition contained seven songs about the cuckoo bird.

Arguing to excise Love Songs entirely, Ruth repeated word for word an admonishment she herself often received. “Love,” she blustered, “is a commitment, not a feeling.”

Despite her bracing claim, in the end Love Songs were merely printed in their own book. Ruth was assigned to illustrate its cover—some carnal floral growth on a country gate—and did so with the deep proficiency of holy obedience.
