Main-street voters and the political class cannot operate without each other – they are two halves of the same democracy – and yet the thread that holds them together is stretching thin. Voters are increasingly turning to minor parties and independents because they have no faith in today’s political outcomes. While some minor parties and independents have a lot to offer, demagogues only increase the risk of voter self-harm. People in my town report being disengaged from a political system because they see politicians and media serving themselves. Yet there is no shortage of political discussion on the main street; indeed, people are not averse to discussing policy. It is just that the policy changes so quickly and politicians argue from both sides of an issue in a short space of time so often that people are loathe to commit energy anymore. Rural voters around me have a kind of political burn-out. That they share with the city, but what makes my fellow country voters interesting is whether they will change their long-held voting patterns. They know that the most potent, last-resort political act they can carry out is to change their vote.
