Dozens of cases of suicide were reported among students, usually accompanied by a protest letter. Typical in this regard was a letter from an art school student:

It has always seemed to me that scandalous injustice reigns in Soviet land. On the one hand, enormous riches, on the other, depressing poverty. On one hand, fat NEPmen in bustling cafés, on the other, homeless children and starving students.102
