Looked good on paper, she thought sourly. Her neck ached from the whiplash, her teeth hurt from them being clenched so tightly, and she was certain that, when her body was found years later by archaeologists, her hands would be melded with the steering wheel. They were now encased entirely within the blast. Burning rocks and tumbling boulders flew everywhere, some striking the rear of the mower; the heavy-duty safety glass had starred in more than one place. Soon, metal-melting heat would rush through the opening, ending all their troubles instantly as they became liquefied. The noise had become so all-encompassing it had become silence; it was a strange phenomenon. The human mind, its inability to process one further ounce of stimuli, reduces all sound to one solid wall of white noise. Maddie felt her heart and stomach lurch as the mower did what she thought it might. They were ten feet off the surface and gaining altitude at an alarming rate.

Alarms began to ring as the collisions of rocks lessened. She thought they might be out of the worst of it until a boulder, nearly the size of the mower itself, bashed into the rear end with enough upward force that the car spun in space, ass over top.

“Maddie, make it stop!” Sam begged.

She’d been about to do just that by turning the gyroscopes back on, but the last hit had killed the power. With the life support systems off-line as well, it was quickly getting cold inside. Maddie could see her breath as she did what she could to restart the machine. Tyler vomited, adding his stomach bile to the churning mass of material within the vehicle.

“We’ll be breaking through the moon’s gravitational field soon,” Sandra said.

“I don’t need a play-by-play, Sandra; I need a way to turn this bucket back on so I can get us stabilized and back down.”

“Then do something!” Sandra ordered.

Maddie began working on the two thumbscrews located beneath the steering wheel. She pulled a small panel away and tried to put her hand in but couldn’t get much more than three fingers in.

“Sam, I need you over here.”

The girl unbuckled and picked her way over, doing her best to avoid her boyfriend’s stomach butter. “Ew, so gross!” she said as a thick, viscous chunk smeared across the side of her face and up over her head.

“Come on, girl, you can worry about getting cleaned up later,” Maddie told her. She grabbed her helper by the arm and forcibly pulled her close. “I need you to put your hand in there.” Maddie held Sandra in tight to keep her from spinning away.

“I can fit four fingers; what am I trying to do?”

Maddie couldn’t see past the girl to tell what she was doing.

“I’m thinking…okay, there are three small circuit boards. You need to pull one of them out.”

“I…I can…yup. There’s one.” She shifted. “Okay, I feel another…I can sort of touch a third, but I can’t go any further.”

“You need to pull one of the two.
