You often meet runners you know little or nothing about. If there are heats and semi-finals, it pays to have your coach or a running ally who is not competing look the field over and estimate the capabilities of the unknown quantities. This is usually necessary at the Olympics and big internationals because there you often come up against other runners for the first time.

You can also test these runners out in heats or semi-finals by running the race with a sharp finishing sprint to gauge their speed. Or you can make it a long sustained sprint, though the others will not always take the bait and do what you want them to do, and you have to be pretty confident yourself. But it is interesting that once a runner lets go a sprint, the others follow unless the standard of the field is poor. Some runners mix the pace continually and they need watching because, if you have not got good pace judgement, you can be fooled into an unnecessary series of windsprints.
