Chapter 12

Chapter 12

Arkas didn’t stick around after saying his piece. He nodded curtly to each dragon, made sure Jeremy was largely in one piece, then vanished before anyone could ask him further questions. For Becca’s part, her mind had already drifted to everything she would need to create the tracking spell. Locating Goliath was theoretically not even that hard. In fact, she had everything she needed to do it now. The issue was that the version of the spell she could freely cast would only point her towards his location. That would technically work, but seeing as how they didn’t know exactly where he was, they could end up following his signal for days before finally finding him.

By then, it could be too late. Tamiel could have located Behemoth and fully unleashed the beasts on the world. They needed something more immediate, something that showed them Goliath’s precise location. For that, Becca would need Goliath’s blood and a map.

“I’m going to head to the Library,” Becca said after noticing Jeremy and Lewis were silently standing around her. “I need to work out the spell, figure stuff out. Jeremy, I’ll need you to come with me,” she quickly added as the human let out a long, drawn-out yawn.

“Why? What could I do to help?” Jeremy slurred, blinking sleepily up at her.

“You have the spear, and the spear has Goliath’s blood,” Becca reminded him. Also, I think you need to get away from Martha, she silently added.

She didn’t want to say it out loud, but she was worried about him. Jeremy was being used as a weapon to protect the humans from the chaos beasts. At first, Becca had seen the logic in that, but now that she knew the spear was keeping him blind to his injuries, she was terrified for his safety. Martha was all too eager to swing Jeremy around like a weapon and fire him willy-nilly, with no regard for the damage it was doing to him. And the Champion, numbing the pain, was only making things worse. Jeremy could receive a life-threatening blow and would be none the wiser. He could die on his feet, and the Champion would still pilot his corpse like a macabre puppet.

If Becca ever got the chance to speak to the Champion face to face, she would have so many words for them.

Jeremy swayed sleepily on his feet for a few seconds before nodding in agreement. “Would you mind if I rode on your back?” he asked. “I always get really tired when the Champion takes over.”

“Of course,” Becca said. She offered him her wing as a ramp to climb up, and he gingerly stumbled up the limb. He sprawled face-down on her back and was snoring in seconds. As he dozed off, the spear slipped through his fingers and vanished in a puff of silver particles.

Lewis looked sadly down at Jeremy on Becca’s back and pursed his lips when she met his gaze. “I’m going to check on our moms,” he said after a moment of silence.
