Chapter 9

Abby

Abby raised her hands and took a deep breath. Her head spun from the kiss and Titus’s proximity, not to mention the information he’d just dropped on her. She stepped back, putting more distance between them. He had to stop touching her. He had to stop being around her. Hadn’t she asked him to leave her alone?

Wait, she’d gone out there. She’d shown up to give him what for since he’d stolen her journal. She glanced at her dainty silver wristwatch and shook her head. “I need to get back to work. I closed up for a bit so I could come out here. Just get me my journal back, okay?” Her lips tingled as she spoke, still affected by the kiss. Warmth flooded her face as she remembered she hadn’t fought him off too convincingly. What if he thought he could kiss her whenever he wanted?

What if he did?

A slight thrill coursed through her. No. She couldn’t lose her heart to him again. That wasn’t an option.

Abby couldn’t repeat the same things her grandmother had gone through. Judging by the way the family line had split up, Abigail hadn’t ended up with Gabriel. She couldn’t have. Her love story was going to be as tragic as Abby’s was. Abby wasn’t amused to be reliving the fate of another woman in her family a hundred and fifty years before.

“Abby, let’s have dinner together. We need to talk about this journal and what it could mean.” Titus and his husky low voice needed to stop talking. Just stop. Abby couldn’t think with the things just his voice did to her. “I wouldn’t mind talking more about what I know.”

As tempted as she was, hadn’t she been free when he’d stayed out of her life? Now, what? She had to see him every day? That didn’t make sense. She shook her head. “No. I asked you to stay away from me.”

Amusement darkened his gaze. “You came to me.”

Abby narrowed her eyes and cut her gaze back to him. “You stole my journal. You brought this on yourself. Give me the book back and I’d be happy to go back to the way things were.” Anger was simmering again to a boil. She could barely pull back her frustration with Titus.

He held up his hands. “Okay, whoa, I surrender. Look, go out with me to dinner. We can even go Dutch. I just want to talk about the journals and see what you found out about that Norson guy.” He didn’t step closer to her, which gave Abby the space she needed to think properly.

The mention of Brian reminded Abby of a better excuse not to go out with Titus. She shook her head. “No, I can’t. I have plans with him tonight to go out for pizza.” She wouldn’t hide her relationship with the man from Titus. Even though she couldn’t fight the feeling that she was being disloyal to Titus, Abby knew logically that she wasn’t doing anything wrong. Declaring the date to him was her biggest step toward defiance she could come up with.
