Massage

The day after a long event, your muscles may ache, particularly if you did not have enough protein before or after the event. Perhaps you took a hot shower right afterward, and this caused even more muscle inflammation and pain.

The day after the event is a good time to get a massage, but not immediately afterward. Lactic acid builds up after a long workout. Some massage therapists claim within an hour of an event they get lactic acid out of muscles with a massage, but they really are just moving the lactic acid around and making more microtears, the byproduct of exercise. The day after the event is the best time for a sports massage to help move lactic acid out of muscles and into the blood circulation to help neutralize it.

After a long workout, I suggest you take a cool shower. A hot shower inflames muscles. Or, if you are really sore, try an ice bath. If you are still in pain for five to seven days after the long workout, you won’t want to go back and do it again. The goal is to recover quickly, so you do want to repeat a similar long event in the future.
