Chapter Sixteen
IF HAVING ELECTRIC jolts ratcheting up my arm was terrifying, the things I saw between the waves of pain was much, much worse. Visions flashed through my mind like a kaleidoscope on crack. The swiftness of the transitions and the blurring of colors made me nauseous. I must have staggered under the suddenness of it all because Parrish caught me by the waist as I sagged against her like a sack of potatoes. Her warmth and solid muscle put some stiffness back into my knees.
"What in the name of sweet fuck is going on with you?" she said as she peered askance at me. "You on dope or something?"
I laid a palm against her ribs to steady myself. I couldn't be indignant at the question, not when I'd used dope to help my customers get what they paid for.
"I have no idea." The words came out a bit breathy, as though all the wind had been slammed out of me. "I just. I think I just saw the killer." My hand went to my head. It wasn't dizzy anymore but it hurt like a mother. "Killings." I corrected myself. "I think I just saw the murders. None of them fought their deaths at all. They just let all that happen to them."
"That's it," she said and dropped her hand from my waist to pull out her phone. "I'm calling Layne."
I reeled away, holding my head in my hands because now it really hurt. I wouldn't be surprised if some evil demon was chiseling away at my skull from inside. The pain was so great, I was vaguely aware of her voice as she addressed the person on the other end of the line, Layne presumably. Whatever he was saying on his end had her cursing more than she was talking.
At one point, I heard her say, "OK. Hold on." And then a bright light shone in my face. I squinted back at it, realizing she was holding her phone with the torch turned on.
With my hand shielding my eyes, I growled at her. "What's up with that?"
"There," she said. "You see?" This directed into her phone.
When Layne responded, I heard him through the phone. Angry or worried or afraid, I couldn't be sure. He swore. "Keep her there for Pete's sake and don't touch a single thing."
"Do you think making dust angels on the floor counts for touching things?" she said as she eyed me.
I'd already sunk to the floor and stretched my legs out and was just leaning back because my torso, my head, and my shoulders had just got way too heavy to hold up anymore.
"Fuck," Layne said through the phone and Parrish echoed the sentiment before powering down the screen and tucking it back into the waistband of her pajama pants.
She crossed her arms as she studied me.
"He says not to move."
"No worries there," I said.
"He says we need to stay put till he gets here."
I tucked my chin into my chest so I could see over it to her face.
