Chapter 9–Hunter

Derby fans are intense.

I can’t believe that someone would have the nerve to attack a player in the game but also leave a threatening note in a locker. Beth looks so shocked when she sees it that if I’d had any questions about her involvement in what had happened to Gina, they were gone.

Not that I had.

Beth is an honest person. She would never resort to hurting someone.

Her ex-fiance on the other hand…well, I have a feeling he’s behind who hit me on the street, and even though he’s been fooling around with Gina, there’s a spark of suspicion in my mind that he might have had something to do with what happened on the track. I wouldn’t put it past him to hire someone to cause trouble. It makes for a good story.

I need to find out more about this guy.

But now is not the time. Beth is clearly rattled and I think the best thing we can do is get away from the roller rink. I take the letter in her locker, fold it up and slip it into my pocket.

“C’mon,” I say. “Let’s get you home.”

Her phone pings and she fishes it out of her purse. She grabs my arm, stopping me in my tracks as she studies her phone.

“Hunter,” she says. “Look at this.”

I take the phone from her expecting to see a video of the man assaulting Gina. Instead, it’s a picture of Beth’s front door. Someone has written the word “bitch” in red paint across the front of it. I squint at the sender of the picture. It’s from social media and has been posted and reposted several times, making it hard to see where it originated.

“Okay. Home is not an option right now,” I say.

Her eyes well with tears, tugging at my heartstrings.

“I know where we can go.” I take her hand, pull her towards me. “It’s going to be okay.”

Her lips are soft beneath mine, but I can feel hesitation there, too.

“I’m scared,” she whispers. “I didn’t think being here was going to cause harm to anyone”

“I know that.”

“But the fans out there…” she shudders. “It’s like they just snapped or something.”

“I got your back, Beth..”

We walk out to my car and leave the parking lot without anyone seeing us. Beth sighs and stares out the window, defeat hunching her shoulders. Neither of us talks on the short drive to my mother’s house, but I do call the cops and report the property destruction at Beth’s loft.

When we get there, Mom is already standing on the porch, a look on her face that I’ve come to understand is her “premonition” face. I used to see it all the time when I was a teenager. She always just seemed to know when I was in trouble.

I was never sure if she was really psychic or if she was just a good parent.

Her hair is pulled back into a scarf and she’s wearing a flowy purple overcoat over her black top and jeans. Very mother earth.
