CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Happily Ever After College Grounds, Location Unknown

“Let’s rock ’n’ roll, let those leaves all sway,” Elvis sang, continuing to twirl in the air, like he was a ballerina dancing on air. “No more worries, let ’em fade away. Come on, tree, let’s sing this song. We’ll dance together all night long!”

“That was simply remarkable,” Faraday remarked, leading the way out of the Bewilder Forest. “I can’t believe the transformation you created in that grumpy tree spirit.”

“Well, it’s the power of music,” Elvis said, coming out of a spin and continuing forward, floating belly down.

When they got to the open grassy lawn of Happily Ever After grounds, the moon was illuminating the area brightly. The light shimmered over the lake in the distance and many buildings scattered over the manicured grounds. The grass was covered in moon dew, reminding Rose of how their journey had started.

That seemed like hours ago, but it wasn’t quite that long. Now she just had one last thing to do. Although it was supposed to be the easiest, making a wish, it somehow felt like the most difficult. She had to wish for something that she really wanted. Also, it seemed to be a lesson in faith because she needed it to be something she wished would come true and believe that it could and would.

There were so many things that she wanted but only so many that seemed to qualify for this purpose. Rose could wish for things for the House of Fourteen or help her with the witches, but for some reason, she felt that this needed to be more personal.

Pausing in the open area of the grounds, Rose and her companions looked up in awe at the yawning dark sky twinkling with stars.

She focused on a particularly bright one that seemed to be pulsing with a magic unlike the others. That seemed like the right one to wish upon.

“I don’t think that stars should have guns,” Elvis said randomly, breaking the peaceful silence.

Rose laughed abruptly. “Say what?”

“Well, you know, shooting stars,” Elvis replied. “Stars that have guns and shoot places up. That just seems wrong, but maybe that’s because I don’t like guns in general. Maybe they can be singing stars and spread joy instead of bullets.”

“Can I ask you something?” Rose asked in a thoughtful manner, a real softness in the request. “And I mean this with my heart and soul.”

“Of course,” Elvis replied.

“Would you shut your trap?” Rose asked, shaking her head at her chimera and returning her attention to the star she’d picked. “I need to focus, and I can’t do it with your babbling on about gun-slinging stars.”

“Fine, I’ll be quiet.” Elvis pretended to invisibly zip his lips and throw the key over his shoulder.

Rose smiled, thinking of the wish she had. It was small and pure. But also most importantly, it was something she really wanted. And almost as importantly, it was something she thought could come true…very soon, hopefully.

Just as her eyes swelled with happy tears at the thought of her wish coming true, the star shone even brighter.
