Chapter 17
Autumn

âWhat the hell is that?â Locke shuffled from beside me along the seat to get off, and Rane pulled her to her feet. She waddled across to the corner of the room and touched the handle of the pram Hades had forged for her.
I buried my mouth in my hands. Ridiculously big and heavy, the gift was beautiful but not practical, and I knew it was a mistake to bring it. Hades had gone overboard in his design and not thought about functionality or practicality for use by humans. But Iâd been so touched by the thought and sentiment at the time he showed me that I hadnât said anything. That all changed when he blinked Lockeâs baby carriage into her living room, and it glimmered, in stark contrast to her casual furniture and laid-back style.
Hades beamed as he jumped up to show her. âItâs a gift for the baby.â
âI can see that.â She chuckled, swiping her forehead as she studied it. âBut Iâll get held up at gunpoint if I go out with this thing.â
Poor Hades didnât understand her terminology. âGun point?â
She pointed her forefinger and lifted her thumb, and pretended to shoot from them. âYou know? Pow, pow, pow!â She cocked her fingers and jerked them up, and I giggled at how out-of-touch Hades was sometimes. I liked it and thought it cute.
He smiled. âOh, the fire tappers. Dangerous things. Many of the souls in my Underworld have been sent there from wounds from those devices.â
Locke side-eyed me, and I smiled at her. Exactly why poor she and her harem didnât want this pram near her baby. Clueless Hades ran a palm along the sparkling golden lines of the carriageâs handle.
She moved to Hades and pinched his cheeks. âThis is why I love you so much. Youâre so funny!â
I agreed. He was adorably clueless and entertaining, and I bet one of many reasons I had loved him before⦠no, not thinking about that.
Locke pulled back and rubbed her belly, her joyful expression hardening. âBut, seriously, I canât accept this.â
âItâs impressive.â Rane studied the sleek lines, his eyes widening at all the sparkling decoration of jewels. He smelled like varnish, sawdust, and oil, giving me the impression he worked a lot in the garage, backed by the fact the house had a lot of wooden objects, like a polished old wagon wheel by the door, a shoe rack, coat hanger, and a new kitchen, freshly stained and polished.
âYeah, babe.â She moved to his side and touched his huge arm. âBut junior love goddess would get kidnapped in this.â
âItâs a gift worthy of a baby of the love god!â Hades replied indignantly.
He twitched with irritation, and I shifted off the chair, meeting her for a hug⦠well an awkward side hug, crossing over our bellies. âYouâre having a girl?â
Locke hugged her man and rubbed her stomach. Rane, I believe she called him. âSure am.â
Wonderful news. I rubbed at my growing bump and wondered if baby Underworld would be a god or goddess.
