Chapter Twenty-Eight
Hattie wasnât as surprised by Kristenâs admission as much as she was that Dante had come through for her. After Kristen told Hattie that Insleeâs alibi was fake, they agreed that they needed to call Det. Granger. Hattie kept Kristen holed up in her reading room and brought her some tea and snacks while she waited.
Hattie paced back and forth behind the counter as she waited for Det. Granger to arrive. He had sounded shocked on the phone when Hattie had given him the news, so shocked in fact, Hattie wondered if he took her seriously. Det. Granger promised Hattie heâd be there.
When he arrived nearly twenty minutes later, Hattie was out of breath with worry. She wanted to scream at him and ask what took so long, but she held it together.
âSheâs in the back,â Hattie explained as she practically pulled Det. Granger by the arm.
âWhen did Kristen Inslee come to tell you this?â
âAbout an hour ago. As soon as she told me what she knew, I called you. She said she doesnât know for sure if Inslee killed Tucker, but she knows she lied to you about his alibi and suspects heâs involved.â
As they reached the door and Hattie opened it, Det. Granger held her back. âI need you to stay outside.â
Kristen jumped up, nearly knocking her tea over. âNo, I want Hattie to stay. Iâm more comfortable with her here.â
âI donât think thatâs a good ideaâ¦â Det. Granger started to say.
Kristen interrupted, taking a step toward the door. âIf thatâs how itâs going to be, Iâm leaving and not telling you anything. I came here because I trusted Hattie. She stays or you can forget I was ever here.â
Det. Granger took a deep breath, exhaling sharply. Hattie could tell how annoyed he was by the whole thing. âFine,â he said begrudgingly. He sat down on the couch next to Kristen and let Hattie take her chair.
Det. Granger pinned his eyes on Kristen. âWhy donât you start from the beginning and tell me everything you know.â
Kristen told Det. Granger what she had told Hattie, slowly at first, and then she had more confidence in her voice. She didnât add or leave any detail out. Her story remained consistent.
When she was done, Det. Granger asked, âWhen did Matthew Inslee ask you to lie?â
Kristen took a sip of her tea and set the cup down on the table in front of the couch. âIt wasnât until we got back to my place after we left the Saints & Sinners Ball. We hadnât been dating that long, and I was surprised he wanted to leave. He played it off like he couldnât wait to get me home, but once we got there, he left quickly. Matthew said he had forgotten to tell someone something. He never said what, and I didnât press the issue. He told me to change and that heâd be right back.â
âHow long before he was back?â
âLonger than I thought he would be,â Kristen explained. âIt was probably about an hour.
