Chapter 13

She drops Eason’s insecurely bound hands and turns to me in shock. “What did you do?” she demands.

It takes me a minute to understand. This form of Ember isn’t real. It’s not a robot. She is nothing more than projections on a carefully constructed set of barrier fields, just like the changing maze or all the obstacles of the Gold Trial. And she can’t touch me now.

She swings her arms wildly toward me, but I feel nothing except the slightest tickle as they pass right through me, as though one of us is a ghost.

Ignoring her attack, I turn to Eason, who has wasted no time wriggling his hands free. He sits up and frees his legs from the straps that bind them. “Take my hand,” I say, remembering how Ty’s connection to me pulled him through the barrier field when we were expelled from The City. Even though he hadn’t had the antidote, with our hands clasped the barrier couldn’t make a clear distinction between where I ended and he began.

Without hesitation, he leaps from the sinister table and grabs my outstretched hand with much more strength than I would have expected him capable of just seconds ago. I wonder if his frail appearance was partially an act.

An evil-looking device with spikes covering the surface flies toward us. It appears Ember can control the objects in this room with a mere thought.

We leap to the side, but we’re too late. The weapon hits me directly, though “hit” isn’t the right word, because it sails right through me as though I’m nothing but air. After it’s passed through me, it does the same to Eason.

He flinches, and then exhales in relief when he finds that, much to his astonishment, he’s completely unharmed.

I’m expecting more attacks, but they don’t come. Instead, Ember freezes just as she did when she was calculating my odds of escape, but this time for much longer. I suppose calculating how Eason and I are now completely unaffected by any barrier field is more than her circuits can handle.

I slip Eason’s intercuff key from my pocket and remove my intercuff before Ember recovers enough to realize she could still control me with this.

“We have to go!” Eason says, and pulls me toward the door.

I pull him back. “Terrance might still be there, waiting.” Barrier fields may not be able to affect us, but blasters certainly can. “The window,” I whisper.

We race toward it past Ember, who’s still standing like a ghostly statue. The window is made of a solid pane of glass with no way to open it. There’s a spiked hammer on the ground next to me, and I reach for it, but find that I’m just as unable to grasp it as Ember is to touch me.

“I’m going to let go for a second,” I say, keeping my voice low. “When I do, throw that hammer at the window to break it, then grab my hand again.”

He nods.

Reluctantly, I unclasp his hand. He spins
