Chapter Five
Walking out of the parking garage, the cold air of the winter day hit him full in the face. There wasn't freedom out here. A burden had settled heavily onto his shoulders and, no matter how he tried, he couldn't dislodge it. A security guard stood at the entrance of the garage with a yellow cab idling nearby.
"Mr Hernandez, Oracle asked that I have a car waiting for you. The driver has already been paid to take you home." Diego mumbled his thanks as the man hastily opened the taxi door. "Sir?" Diego focused on the man. He was Hispanic, a little taller than Diego, and had a wide smile. "Would you mind autographing something for me?"
"I'm sorry?"
The guard gave Diego a sheepish look. "I watched you in the Los Angeles Parkour games a couple of years ago. You were amazing, like you were flying—and some of your moves… you were brilliant! We followed your progress until you retired."
He held out a five-by-seven photo and a sharpie. It was a picture of Diego and four other young men. He recognized the guard as one of the boys with an arm thrown over the shoulders of the younger version of him.
"What's your name?"
"Eric Vasquez."
Diego scratched his name in the corner and flipped the photo and started scribbling. He handed the picture back to Eric. The man bounced as he read the back of the photograph, his eyes widening at the inscription.
"Holy shit! The guys are not going to believe me when I tell them. I can't believe you remembered!"
Diego blushed at Eric's enthusiasm. "Were all of you able to get out?"
Eric's expression turned serious. "Yeah, man, we all got out. It wasn't easy. What you did—you made it possible for us to make a better life for ourselves. You saved us, ese. We would've died without your help."
"Nah, man, you would've found another way. I simply made it easier. It was only money."
Eric shook his head. "You're a hero. You don't even know. The instructors here have taken your techniques and now teach them to the field agents. It's not the same, more practical and less flashy. There's one or two who come close to flying like you did."
Diego was extremely uncomfortable with the praise and hero worship he knew he didn't deserve. Giving Eric a firm handshake, Diego said goodbye and climbed into the taxi. As the cab pulled away, he turned and glanced back. Eric was standing on the curb waving. He gestured in return, remembering his last year in high school. He'd had a good year and earned enough money to cover his college and technical schooling for his sisters. At the last free running game in Los Angeles, he'd met Eric and his friends. They were from a similar neighborhood and had dabbled in Parkour but not for competition. Spending time with them had helped him to decide to set up a college fund for kids like them. He had more money than he needed at the time so he'd split it between the four boys and started a charity.
