Meditation: Before the Icon

1. To have only Jesus. If we dwell upon that thought it becomes frightening. We like to surround ourselves with all sorts of 'necessary' material things. Why are we so attached to them, when we know very well that we will leave the world the same way that Paddy did, naked and facing death alone? We will have 'only Jesus' with us then, if we have developed a relationship with him now.

2. Paddy could not have sunk, socially, any lower, yet at the moment that really mattered he had the last sacraments, a priest by his side and the symbol of the love of Jesus in his hand. Does our social standing really matter very much? Does it matter what others think of us, as long as Christ is our King and we are seeking his will in our lives?

3. Jesus of Nazareth did not automatically do what God asked. There was a tremendous internal battle, which is emphasised for us in Luke's Gospel, where he says 'he prayed even more earnestly, and his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood' (Luke 22;44). A servant, Jesus said, is no greater than his master; so we can expect to have hard times when the struggle within, to find or do God's will, will be a bitterly fought one. Do we shy away from such a struggle, give in and take an easy way out? Often we cannot say Yes' to God without first saying 'No' to ourselves.
