Chapter Five

Aaron

The book she died for is blank. Cat lies dead in the bed in our clubhouse, and I stare down at the book she risked everything for. Something about all of this doesn’t make sense.

Something I’m determined to figure out.

Feeling frustrated, I close the book and set it on the nightstand beside her. A second later, I hear Cat gasp and her eyes fly open.

I’m sitting on the bed beside her in an instant, letting out just enough of my incubus powers to calm her. “It’s okay. You’re alright.”

She shoots into a sitting position on the bed, and I gather her close as she begins to sob. Everything inside of me feels tight. Even my chest feels tight. What must it be like for her to die and reborn? What does she see or experience in that time between life and death? How much of the pain from dying does she remember?

I hold her tighter, hating that she even has to go through this.

Time passes. Her crying slows. When she draws back from my soaking shoulder, her blue eyes are still filled with tears.

“I died,” she says, softly.

“You did,” I tell her, hating that it’s true. Hating that we let her be hurt when we could have stopped it. “But you’re okay now.”

She touches my face.

“What?” I ask, unsure about the look in her face.

“I was just thinking that it’s nice to wake up to a soft touch.”

Why does that make my heart hurt? “Between the four of us, you’ll always have that.”

“I hope so,” she says, then wipes the tears from her eyes. “Where are the guys?”

“They’re sleeping in the living room.”

It felt wrong to all of us to sleep beside a dead woman. We instead agreed to take turns staying up with her.

“What time is it?” she asks.

“Almost morning,” I tell her.

She nods, then looks down at her hands.

“Are you... are you okay?”

Slowly, she looks up, and there’s such a vulnerability to the way she looks at it me that it steals my breath. “I... everything happened so fast here. Between us. With my brother and the school.”

I wonder if she spent her time in death thinking about that. The idea troubles me. Things have happened quickly. Why hadn’t I considered that might be upsetting to her?

“I know,” I say. “I’m sure it’s been a lot to handle.”

“The thing is... I’m engaged to four men I barely know.”

Her words surprise me. “You know us.”

“Not really,” she says frowning. “Only that some of you were so cruel when I met you and then changed.”

I want to keep arguing, but my father always said that a person’s feelings were never wrong. “Is there anything I can say or do to help you feel better about things?”

“You can tell me about all of you. Everything.”

And I must be a damned fool, because I’d tell this woman anything. “How about I get you something to drink and a snack, and then I share more information with you than you’d ever want to know about us.
