WE WALKED BACK TO THE palace in silence, arms hanging by our sides, lost in the memory of what had just transpired. It seemed no matter which way I looked at it, things couldnât get worse. When you were first taken, they leveraged your compliance against the threat of harm to anyone you might have left behind. Once enough time had passed, they leveraged your continued compliance against the well-being of any new family you might have made.
It was a perfect system. Perfectly stacked against the people it ensnared.
Much as I tried to forget, my mind was swimming with Demetriusâthe look of quiet sadness etched permanently into his face. A look that deepened every time he was torn between the words daughter and wife.
I could not imagine. Could not imagine.
And yet...I must.
âWe should probably be getting back,â Will said quietly. While he looked composed on the outside, I knew he was just as shaken as me. âI donât know what time Rosalynd...â
He trailed off suddenly, staring up towards the ramparts with a strange look on his face.
I followed his gaze, shielding my eyes against the sun, only to see the vague outline of a person standing atop the castle wall, leaning far out over the edge.
It was impossible to see who it was from such a distance. It was impossible to have even guessed. But in a moment of chilling clarity, we both spoke at the same time.
âRemy.â
In a flash, we left the gardens behindâbarreling past the oblivious courtiers and sprinting as fast as we could up the stairs. A strange sight, to be sure, but no one tried to stop us. We belonged to the high court now. As long as we werenât running away from the palace, we were free to hurry about as we wished within its walls.
Faster and faster we climbedâpanting for breath as the steps flew out beneath us. It was a miracle no one else had yet seen him. It would be a miracle if we got there in time. But I couldnât bear to think what might happen if we didnât.
Please, I prayed, kicking off my shoes for greater speed. Please let him still be alive.
What seemed like a lifetime later, we reached the top story and kicked in unison at the outer door. It flew open with a crash as we spilled onto the stone walkway and slid to a sudden stop.
It was Remy all right. Though I hardly recognized him.
Gone was the boy Iâd met in orientation, the one with the lovely face and the shy smile. It seemed only the shell of him remained. The beauty was intact but the body was broken, with faded marks and bruises lacing up his arms. There was a deadness to his eyes I couldnât possibly fathom, and his lower lip was torn straight up the middle, as if someone had carved it with a knife.
I stared for several seconds in silent horror, unable to pinpoint anything different while knowing instinctively that nothing was the same.
