The Chicago and North Western Railroad and its predecessor railways had four separate terminals on Kinzie Street between 1848 and 1911. The above postcard shows a bird’s-eye view of the Chicago and North Western Railroad’s fifth passenger terminal, which stood at Madison and Canal Streets west of downtown from 1911 to 1984. From here, travelers could take the City of Los Angeles train service to California. The station’s architects, Charles Frost and Alfred Granger, also designed the Chicago and North Western Railroad’s corporate office building (right). Located at the northeast corner of Jackson Boulevard and Franklin Street and completed in 1904, the building now contains the offices of the City Colleges of Chicago. Suburban commuter trains still use its rail right-of-way and train platforms, but an office and retail building replaced the terminal building in the mid-1980s.
