Diamonds Aren’t Forever

Eve Cassidy was a bad girl. I knew that from the off. Sometimes, you just can’t help yourself, though. After dragging her in for questioning, we drew lots down at the station to see who got to interview her. It was a rigged game. By hook and by crook, I made sure I won. There was no way I was missing out on this opportunity. As I entered the interview room I knew that every other cop in the building had their noses pressed tight to the glass of the two-way mirror that looked in on proceedings – even the girls. I couldn’t blame them. Eve Cassidy was a classical beauty who smouldered pure sex appeal. Six foot in stilettos, which she always wore, Eve had a tangle of auburn hair that tumbled enticingly onto her shoulders and a pair of cute cupids that practically begged to be kissed. She was guilty, everyone knew it; the only question was, guilty of what?

Eve glanced up at me as I leant back against the door with my broad, brawny shoulders. I fooled myself into thinking that she was admiring my trim torso. Very slowly, very deliberately, she reached into her jacket pocket and withdrew a packet of cigarettes. She made a great play of the fact that it was empty, before scrunching up the box and tossing it over her left shoulder into the waste bin in the corner of the room. ‘I don’t suppose you’d have one, would you, Inspector Hart?’

I was across at her side as fast as I could move in order to offer her a cigarette. She accepted it with a murmur of thanks and slid it between those to die for lips. The cigarette hung there enticingly for a moment before she asked, ‘And a light?’

‘I’m afraid it’s against the rules to smoke in the interview rooms.’

She shrugged nonchalantly, withdrew the nicotine stick and tossed that into the bin also, hitting the bullseye without even looking. ‘I’ve been meaning to give up anyway.’

‘A wise move.’

‘I’m full of them.’

‘Such as?’

She grinned deliciously. ‘That’d be telling, inspector.’

‘Tell away.’

‘That’s not my style.’

‘So what is?’

‘Excuse me?’

‘Your style.’

‘Well if you come around to my apartment one evening I might just show you …’

The sentence trailed off and hinted at a myriad of possibilities that my over active imagination was only too happy to conjure up. With a supreme effort I tried to drag my concentration back to the matter at hand. ‘I wonder what else you could show me?’

‘Such as?’

‘Well, we could start by taking a look at your diamond collection.’

She shrugged for effect. ‘I’m afraid that wouldn’t take very long.’

‘Really? No recent additions, then?’

‘Sadly not.’

‘So if I was to come around your apartment later, there is no way I would find the Farchetti diamond?’

‘The what?’ She played innocent as well as anyone I’d ever met. Heaven alone knows how given her foxy, feline figure.

‘The Farchetti diamond. It was being displayed at Tiffany’s two nights ago when it went missing.
