your future work or performance. I just want all the men here to be

happy, comfortable.”

“I understand and appreciate your honesty,” Everett replied and

gave up sipping his beer. Instead he chased large gulp after gulp.

“That bad, huh?”

Everett nodded as he recalled the phone conversation with Gina.

He was still simmering.

Zander got up and went into the kitchen. Everett could hear the

clank of bottles.

“It looks like you need another,” Zander stated as he sat another

beer in front of him. “Help yourself to the kitchen. I think I’m going

to turn in.”

“Thanks, Zander,” Everett said and stared up at the tall cowboy.

There was a deep level of admiration for the man. He knew very little

about Zander, but could see a man who was not at all conflicted with

his life or sexuality. How wonderful would that be?

Everett sat in the dark while he drank the next beer and pondered

over everything that had happened throughout the day. Then he

recalled what Kyle had said after he asked why life had to throw

curveballs. Kyle simply said, “Why must we make it seem so?”

At the time the statement pissed him off, but now that he had time

to reflect, the statement was actually profound. Why must I make it

seem so? Was life that bad? He wondered and sipped his beer. He had

spent the better part of his life living for others while ignoring his

needs. Fantasy was the only way he could explore the deep desire he

felt even as he tried to deny it. For years he had gone through a love,-

hate relationship with himself, hating that he harbored an affinity for

men while only going through the motions with his wife.

His life hadn’t been terrible by any means. He was a good father

and provider. Jenna and Natalie had turned out remarkably well, both

in college, were intelligent and well rounded. “Huh,” he whispered

into the darkness. Outside of his secret, Everett realized he had little

to worry about. He hadn’t failed as a father, maybe a little in the
