Two days later, they were still no closer to figuring out why her father seemed to own a diamond mine in Russia, and they still hadn’t heard from Matthew. Dakota was this close to getting on a plane to London herself.

She called Erin to check on her since Samuel had intended to be back in forty-eight hours, and it had been more than twice that.

“Erin Green’s office, this is Morgan. May I help you?”

“Morgan, hi. I was trying to reach Miss Green’s personal cell. Did she forward it to you?”

“Yes ma’am, she did. If your name is on the list, I can transfer you to her, though. She asked to be left alone for the most part today.”

“Dakota Hylander.”

She waited while the assistant checked the list.

“I see you here, Miss Hylander. Give me just a second to transfer you.”

“Hi Dakota,” Erin said a minute later.

“Hey sweetie. How are you? I wanted to check on you and make sure you don’t need anything.”

Erin blew out a long breath. “I’m mad at him. But I’m also proud of him. So I’m a mixed bag of emotions right now. I’m sure things are going to work out. I did finally hear from him night before last, so I know he’s safe.”

Dakota let Erin talk until she was done. “He’ll be home soon. Is there anything I can do for you? Are you coming to Solitaire this weekend?”

“I am. Trinity came in from Vegas to stay with me, so I’m good. She didn’t even need to do that, though. I lived alone for a decade before I got engaged to Samuel. I’m chief of staff to a U.S. Senator. I’m not going to fall apart just because my fiancé took a business trip. I promise.”

Dakota laughed. “Listen to yourself, sweetie. You’re talking a million miles a minute. It’s OK to be worried and nervous and still be the kick-ass woman you are.”

Erin made a sound that was somewhere between a laugh and a cry. “I appreciate that. I’m going to take off at lunch tomorrow and get to Solitaire early. What are your plans?”

“I’m actually heading there tonight if you decide you want to play hooky from work completely tomorrow.”

Erin laughed. “I just might do that. I’ll talk to my deputy and see if I can clear my morning calendar without causing too much of a stir.”

“I think that would be good for you. We can break into Mitch’s bar and drink martinis.”

“I can support that idea. I’ll bring Trinity too. Thanks for calling, Dakota. I appreciate it. I’ll let you know if I’m coming in tonight or not.”

When Erin ended the call, Dakota headed into her kitchen for another cup of coffee. She was currently stuck at home with some security goon standing outside her door. Jax had taken off after discovering the diamond mine and ordered her to stay put until he got back.

But since they didn’t have that kind of understanding, she’d arranged to fly to Solitaire where she would feel at least a little safer.
