From the mirror I watched the vampire in my body, I could feel the cord between us and for a moment could watch through my eyes but I couldn’t take control no matter how hard I fought.

“Well, well, dear Raina.” Damien turned, catching sight of me in the mirror. I clenched my fists as he approached, prowling closer.

“What did you do?” I spat. “Wh—”

“No need for such venom, my love. I have made you into a creature fit for your potential.”

“That creature is not me.”

“On the contrary, all that darkness and anger in you has been unleashed. You are what you were meant to be.” He paused. “It is curious, though. I am unsure how you ended up in the mirror as well.”

I watched him reach up and run a hand through his hair. “How am I here?”

“It appears the goodness in you resisted and has taken up residence in my old location.” He chuckled. “I hope you like it better than I did.” Bile rose in me and I choked back the urge to throw up.

“What are you going to do?” I flinched when his fangs appeared in a toothy grin.

“What I always intended to do. Use the power as the rightful heir of this kingdom to increase my power further. I will show this world what happens to traitors, those who don’t join me will be no less than cattle,” he told me. I blanched, watching him as he spoke. I couldn’t fathom how I ever found him attractive.

I swallowed hard. “I will stop you.”

He laughed. “How? You were weak, Raina. Now your body is strong and you are mine.”

I stumbled as images came to me. Suddenly in my own body I looked down at my blood-soaked hands. Vampires surrounded me and a spike of fear at their closeness shot through me. I felt my body grin, warm coppery blood soaking my tongue. I gave in to the draw of my vampire self, vertigo threatening to overcome me as I wholly looked through her eyes.

The vampires bowed as I passed, stepping over bodies of the palace staff as I looked around the once beautiful orchard room Lucas and Niv had created for me. The leaves were now pure black and the red skin of the apples gleamed. I brushed my hands along the leaves as I approached the doors. I caught sight of Niv ahead of me, stumbling toward Asher and Brigsten. I clawed at the control on my body, and it jerked once before halting. Breathing heavily, I looked at my closest friends and Niv.

“Run,” I screamed at them, trembling at the effort it took to hold the vampire body in place. “Before she takes control again.” I shook harder as I watched them stare at me. I let out a piercing shriek as my control broke and I was thrown backward, falling onto the floor of the reflected room in the mirror.

I cried out in frustration, leaping forward to pound against the glass.

It did not move.

Tears streamed down my face as I continued to push the glass.
