Later, I walked the quiet beach with Bill and Ted, a few items of interesting flotsam washed up and examined. The water still looked nice, and it was not too cold for swimming.

Up in main villa we found Carter. He loudly asked, ‘Can’t you stay out of trouble for a week?’

‘Seems not, no, not without you protecting me. What you been up to?’

‘Been designing my villa, and practising my golf swing. And keeping fit.’

‘Any pain?’ I asked.

‘The odd twinge, but it’s much better.’

‘Steady woman?’

‘Well … not as such, no.’

Stepping to Michelle at the main reception desk, I told her, ‘I’m buying a flat for you, twenty-seven grand, it has potential. When it’s done you can buy it from me, a staff loan over … however long it takes.’

‘We can put down at least fifteen thousand, and pay a thousand a month.’

‘Be paid off quickly then, and a good investment. And in a year or so you can buy an apartment in the retirement village and rent it out.’

‘Everyone here is talking about it, the locals. But the caretaker wouldn’t move, and he wants to be buried next to the house.’

‘We’d have to check the local laws first,’ I quipped. ‘Do that for me.’

‘You want to be buried here?’ she puzzled.

‘Do that for me … gaining information, for me.’

‘Ah. He says it would be OK, on private land.’

‘It’s hotel land, with guests - no dead bodies in hotel rooms. That’s bad for business apparently.’

My parents arrived back from the city, my mother trying hard not to be upset, and they showed me the new house, which needed a roof. At least it took their minds off things.

That evening I sat behind Michelle’s computer and worked on the sketches, adding in a third sketch with the twins. The final sketch was sheer brilliance, since it plugged our new yacht.
