Bill stickers

In the morning I checked my emails, and there were several with attachments, which included images of Dimitri Kilakov and his family, good likenesses and not too old.

After breakfast, and after I had chatted to the police officers stationed outside in their car, Carter handed me a phone number with a dial code, his friends in low places having been hard at work during the night.

I punched the numbers as I stood outside.

‘Da!’

‘Do you speak English?’

‘Moment.’

‘Hello?’ came thirty seconds later.

‘You speak English?’

‘Yes, I studied in England,’ came accented, and from what sounded like a middle-aged man.

‘And you are a printing company in Sevastopol, yes?’

‘Yes. Who are you?’

‘Ricky Roskov.’

‘My god, I see you on television.’

‘I’m led to believe … that you believe in law and order and justice, that you support left wing groups?’

‘Yes..?’

‘I want to send you some money, for you to print many small posters and some large ones, then to stick up the posters at night in certain towns in the Crimea.’

‘Oh. What will be on these posters?’

‘The face of Dimitri Kilakov.’

‘Oh.’

‘It could be dangerous for you, but I will pay well.’

‘We can print without anyone knowing, we do that for political campaigns, and I know people that will stick the posters, paid in cash, no questions – they do this at election time.’

‘Do you have an email address?’

‘Yes.’

I stepped inside and wrote it down. ‘I’ll send you the images, which includes his wife and children.’

‘He has children? He is a sex trafficker!’

‘Exactly, he is a sick fuck and … he does not like people to know about his family, or that he is a sex trafficker in Europe. Do you have friends in Moscow?’

‘Yes, political activists.’

‘I know which area his wife lives, I want posters there as well.’

‘She will not be pleased, and she will leave him – but maybe he threaten to kill her if she does.’

‘Maybe, yes, but the thing he fears the most is publicity. I will send you his images, and the towns we know he has businesses in. How do I send you the money?’

‘I have a friend in England, he has a bank account there.’

‘Return my email with his address, and it will all be kept very quiet. How much do you want?’

‘For posters and men to put them up, two thousand dollars maybe.’

‘Ten thousand dollars will be sent. More to follow.’

‘When do you want this done?’ he asked.

‘As fast as you can.’

‘I wait email.’

Upstairs, I attached the images and the list of towns and businesses, and I sent the email.
