‘I can’t give you what I know yet, but yes – up to no good and linked to Platt’s Solicitors, they took golfing holidays together to Faro, Portugal. So turn up the heat.’

‘Will do, yes.’

I called Nutter. ‘It’s Roskov. Start sabre rattling, and block a few roads around Leicester, then move when asked, no violence.’

‘They not investigating them dead solicitors?’

‘New Chief Constable just resigned, he found the corruption but doesn’t want his hands dirtied.’

‘He’s gone?’

‘He walked out. Go make some noise.’

‘I will,’ he threatened.

I faced Rolf as we sat in the sun. ‘The good thing is … that the local people are up in arms, and it doesn’t seem that it’s me investigating or moving things along. And someone close to our crooked businessman is sending me things anonymously.’

When Carter returned I told him, ‘Your cameras will have picked up the man tipping me off. Leave him alone, but trace him, eh.’
