Twenty One

Autumn had come in all its glory the trees in the park turning to red and gold, then falling in drifts on the paths where the odd person, in a childlike way, would scuff through them kicking them light-heartedly up into the air.

Trigger was at a loose end, feeling he had come to some sort of crossroads in his life where he did not know which way to turn. A high wind was sweeping along the street tearing at his clothes and causing him to shiver. He walked along the empty street head down hood pulled up feeling at his lowest. The truth was he felt lonely and was missing the companionship of the gang and their camaraderie.

The only reason he had ventured out on a night like this was having been forced to listen to his parents rowing over money, it was always money and the lack of it. In one way he secretly sympathised, while on the other hand it annoyed the hell out of him. All that screaming and shouting could not be drowned out even by loud music.

On arriving at the fish and chip shop he saw the door open and a girl almost walked into him. “You wanna’ get out of the way, before I clock you one,” she snarled. Then peering more closely at him, she added, “Don’t I know you?”

Trigger was rather taken back by her aggressiveness, “Yup, we met in the Police station, remember?” he answered.

“Them rossers’ got nothing on me as I got rid of the goods, didn’t I? I aint that daft, what’s your moniker anyway?” she asked.

“I go by the tag of Trigger, if I remember rightly you are Jane, aint you?”

“Hi ya Trigger, just call me Street Chick. Where ya’ going?”

“Just moseying on down,” he answered carelessly, hoping it would impress her. He suddenly liked everything about her, from the way she dressed, in tight black leather trousers and jacket, to the way she had her blonde hair free and easy hanging in untidy curls all over her face. By the street light he saw that her eyes were blue and that she was wearing a thick layer of make-up. She was just his sort of girl.

“Did you pay for them chips?” Trigger asked, watching her pop one into her mouth, they looked so delicious and he was hungry.

“Course not, he’s my uncle, aint he. Come on, I’ll ask him for another freebie.”

Trigger followed Street Chick into the chippies, this was new to him as in the past he had only got what he wanted with demand and menaces.

“This is Trigger uncle, can he have a freebie?” she asked.

“I know who he is alright, used to come in here giving me a lot of bother,” her uncle replied, however he still handed over another portion of fish and chips.

Trigger did not quite know what to do next, having never bothered with girls before. “Want to mosey on down to the park with me?” he inquired hopefully.

“Nah, not in this weather, I’m off home.
