Chapter Eleven

Grayson didn’t want to raise any alarms, so after work he met the boys for a few beers at The Tavern. Nobody seemed to know what had happened to Tony Balducci, not even his uncle Chuck, and Grayson wanted to keep it that way.

The FBI must’ve contacted the supervisor, Bud Ellison, because Bud told someone Tony had left for the day feeling sick.

Grayson had gotten a text from Aria that Tony had confessed to the murders, but nothing else. He’d kept his lips zipped on the mastermind.

He’d waited for another text from her, but she’d gone radio silent—probably regretted that kiss. Probably didn’t want to see him again. Why would she? She figured his part in this drama was over. But she didn’t know him...yet. He wouldn’t give up until the person responsible for Chloe’s murder was behind bars—or dead.

When he and his coworkers bellied up to the bar, Grayson bought the first round and then took his beer to the back room to play some pool. One game, be visible, and then he had to get out of there.

Will got a table first and invited Grayson to play with him. As Grayson chalked up his stick, he caught sight of Rita, giggling on the arm of some buffed-up dude.

Grayson moved around the table, taking shots, bantering with Will and a few women looking on. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Rita edging closer and closer to the pool table, her beefy friend nowhere to be seen.

When Will stopped to talk strategy with one of the young women who’d been dogging him, Rita touched Grayson’s elbow and, through her smile, whispered, “That girl I was with last night—Brandy? She wants to meet with you later.”

Grayson grinned and nodded. Pointing to an angle on the table, he answered, “Why me?”

“I don’t know. She said you were nice. She’s in trouble.”

He hoped nobody else in the bar had noticed his concern for the frightened woman. He rapped his knuckles on the edge of the table. “C’mon, Will. The shot’s not going to get any easier unless you let Becca take it for you.”

As Will guffawed and bent over Becca, his arms wrapped around her in the guise of helping her with the cue, Grayson took a step closer to Rita. “Why not call the cops?”

“She’s scared. Look, I don’t know what she’s mixed up in, but she’s in real trouble here. Can you meet her or not?”

Grayson kept his voice low. “Yeah, yeah. I’ll meet her. Where and when?”

Rita stuck two fingers in the back pocket of his jeans and whistled. “Atta girl, Becca.” Then she spun around and met the pumped-up dude as he returned with her glass of wine.

Grayson blew out a long breath. He had no intention of meeting Brandy on his own. The FBI would want to talk to this woman. She must’ve heard somehow that Tony was off the streets.

Grayson finished the game with Will, intentionally losing to speed things up, and said his goodbyes to his coworkers.
