The grand salon or music room was created in France, taken apart, and shipped to Newport; French workmen came along to reassemble it. Red velvet upholstery and trim on the draperies provides striking contrast against the light grey and gold on the walls.

The dining room rises two stories and has bronze Corinthan capitals on red alabaster columns with very ornate arches, cornices and mouldings above. Massive crystal Baccarat chandeliers sparkle as they give light to the room.

Upstairs, the bathrooms have an interesting feature: four faucets provide either salt or fresh water. Mrs. Vanderbilt had call buttons in her bedroom so that she could conduct household business easily. The oval room's doors are on pivots. Her daughter Gertrude's room has a personal touch, with photos of her honeymoon in Japan on the desk; she married Harry Whitney in 1896. Gladys, the youngest daughter, married a count in Hungary and was active in Hungarian relief during the First World War.
