Half asleep, half awake, Poe felt the presence of a dark clad figure that hovered above him wearing a disguise. His senses were assaulted by a pungent odor. His nose twitched, his eyes snapped open to see Destiny's face just inches above his own. But now it was masked in makeup so she looked even paler than he remembered.
"Edgar, time to wake up."
"How long did I sleep?"
"Almost two hours. It's midnight, the bewitching hour. Time to go out and play."
He sat up. "Time has become meaningless. If I believed in it, then I should be long dead."
"Oh, that's a pleasant thought." She straightened up and helped him to his feet. "Better to think that you have transcended time."
He looked down at his clothes as if seeing them for the first time. "My presence here is a contradiction. I am both alive and dead at the same time."
Roz walked out of her bedroom, trailed by Dylan. "Hurry, Edgar. We're going to a new club. You'll be the guest of honor."
"Will you come with us?" Destiny asked. "If you don't, I understand. I'll stay here with you."
He touched a hand to his heart, bowed slightly. "I will be happy to accompany you to your club. But I must wear my own clothes."
She laughed. "Suit yourself."
Twenty minutes later, the four of them descended the hallway stairs outside the apartment, and stepped into a mild fall night, and, for Poe, into an alien world. He felt comfortable in his fine suit of clothes, but it didn't take long for his mood to change. Even though he was in the company of others and their voices were warm and cheery, he felt uneasy as if they were being followed. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and hunched his shoulders as they ambled down the walkway.
He stared down a few feet in front of him and an old childhood fear returned. His stepmother had told him about children who wandered too far from home and disappeared forever. It even could happen if he allowed his gaze to roam too far, she'd told him. Someone mean and terrible might rush out, capture him, and abscond with him. He'd often wondered if it had already happened and that was how he had lost his real mother.
Destiny wore a long black dress that left her shoulders bare. She explained that it was a fashion from fifty years ago and the way she said it made him think that there was something impressive about wearing old clothes. Like the other two, she wore a long black cloak. With the exception of Roz's odd costume, he found nothing particularly striking about their somber garb. But Destiny told him that they all looked very Goth, as if the term implied a style of dress or a manner of appearance.
After walking several blocks, the skin across the back of his neck tightened. He heard footsteps and voices in the dark. He stole a glance at Destiny, but she smiled as if there was nothing awry.
