Chapter 14

Cami

I had no idea what we were doing tonight. Surprises weren’t my favorite. Lord knows the last surprise had thrown me for a loop. I should learn to ask more questions.

“All he said was to dress casual?” I shifted the hangers in my closet, not knowing what to put on. “That’s very vague. You need to ask more questions.” When I glanced over my shoulder, Sally said, “Sorry, I’ll help you.”

“Thank you.”

She continued to sift through my clothes. In only my panties and bra, I plopped down on my bed. “This is wrong, isn’t it? I mean, who does this?”

Sally pulled out a pair of jeans and a simple navy sweater. “Here, wear this.”

I pulled the sweater over my head. She sat next to me on my bed. “As far as who gets fake engaged? I have no answer for you on that. But I’m sure if I searched online, I might find someone.”

Everything had happened so fast. One minute I was paying for my birthday dinner thanks to a loser date, and the next I was engaged to a man who appeared to have the entire package. “Don’t say it, Sal.”

She laughed. “When I was in Vegas, I threw caution to the wind. Now, you may say, my caution flag has a few holes in it, and I’d probably agree with you. Except I’m doing things on my terms. I’m not being reckless, just having fun. That’s what you need to do—have fun. The hell with your caution flag. Send your freak flag up the pole and try that on for size.”

“I don’t know, Sally. It’s been a long time.”

“Yes, I know. It’s time for some fun. Your terms. Stop trying to make everyone around you happy and do it for yourself.”

“Maybe. I’ll see if the mood strikes me.”

She shook her head. “If you need to worry about mood with a man like Dax posing as your future husband, then that’s your first problem. I’m not telling you to jump him in the car, but damn girl. Let loose. Have fun.”

An hour later I found myself standing on eight spinning wheels. My hair lifted, and my blouse billowed as kids and adults seemed to whip by, forcing my eyes to slam shut. I swore I could hear tiny ball bearings clicking at a rapid speed, almost mocking me. In an attempt to keep upright, my arms shot out to the sides, and my inner voice sent silent prayers up to God that I didn’t break a bone. All that happened while the floor vibrated to retro music blaring through the skating rink’s speakers.

Out of nowhere, an arm flung around my waist before it grabbed my hand. Now in front of me, skating backward, was Dax. Naturally, his posture was as strong as it was when he had sneaks on. As we pulled up to the rink, he finally shared their was a roller-skating party hosted by the center he funded. At first I was excited. But little did I know that I’d be donning skates.
