CHAPTER NINE: LEAVE

Security swarmed in around us, three men in pale blue ready to treat me as one of the intruders. But Van Owen was more interested in asking them about who the Duvals had terrorized, and where Maya had gone. I could stand at the side and keep my sick tangle of guilts held in, until he gave me a moment of thanks for pulling Maya off him.

And I gritted my teeth and used the Pulse once more, just one light touch to amplify that gratitude as he spoke. The one broader smile it got me was enough to loosen the guards’ clustering around me—so a minute later I slipped away.

Finally I could throw myself into dashing after Maya. The Pulse would never pick her out of a crowd, so I could only fling myself down the stairs hoping to catch her leaving.

Too much like the library where we first met... but this time she wouldn’t be waiting to meet up with me. I had to find her, apologize to her, curse myself for bending minds like that.

My feet pounded down the steps, heels digging in to save my balance. How could she do this?

I’d kissed her, I’d never had five seconds to beg her to save Helena with me, somehow...

I burst out onto the lobby floor and stared around the figures in their suits, made for the front entrance.

The Eye had been listening, he’d heard the split between us... he knew Maya would never trust me with her secrets now, unless I caught up to her...

A security guard stepped over to block my way out. “Can I see some ID, sir? We’re not supposed to let anyone out right now.” A spindly man in pale blue who thought a big corporate smile counted as a badge.

“You’ve got no right,” and I sidestepped him.

He moved into my path. “I’ve got my orders.”

One punch, one surge of fear, would put out that damn smile—

Hell, Maya must be long gone by now. I forced my fists down and heaved out a breath, as if I could just expel the worst of the knots inside me.

“Look...” I sighed. “I’m trying to catch up with a girl—small, dark hair, could have come by in a hurry a couple minutes ago.”

“Sorry. I’m afraid nobody like that’s been here. I think,” he admitted.

“Thanks. I hope you’re right.” I turned back and moved in around the businesspeople, catching some of their uneasy mutterings about “disruptions.”

What had gotten into Maya, beating down an old man that way? And with the Eye watching—was that his work, another of his powers working on her mind?

No, not him... I stared around, looking for the other exits. Nobody had twisted Maya’s head up—until I tried to—she simply was that eager to get her answers and defend the parent she’d lost. I should know what that was like.

Except I wouldn’t even see my mother, not for years since she’d been locked up...

I shoved that thought away and moved faster, staring around. Maya was simply desperate, and the Duvals had given her bare moments to make her choices.
