Chapter Nineteen

Diana had returned to the techs’ cabin clad in full combat gear, including Fury in its back sheath. Now and again, she reached over her shoulder to touch the hilt, drawing confidence and calm from her connection to the sentient being inside. Deacon was on her left, hard at work optimizing his signal strength and communication to their planned area of operation, the one he’d found with his hack into the Walter Reed computers.

To her right, Kayleigh was manipulating a pair of drones. The video feeds were visible on the large monitor above her station.

The first was up very high, offering a top-down view of the industrial park the Army medics had visited to treat Bryant. The area was similar to where they’d traced the vehicles from the kidnapping but was in a different part of the city. Serrano’s smart, keeping his resources spread out so no one can easily connect them. Probably has shell corporations and all that garbage, too.

The other drone was flying about three stories above roof height for the buildings in the area and maintaining a distance. Its powerful optic customization provided an exterior view of the warehouse that was the evening’s target. Thermal imaging showed nothing from the interior.

Diana chose to believe that was a function of the technology’s limitations over such a range rather than a sign that Bryant was no longer inside. She simply couldn’t accept the notion that their only clue might turn out to be wrong or outdated.

As the drone circled, a wireframe overlay appeared on the image, marking cameras at several places on the building to maintain good coverage in all directions. A couple of them pointed up, a greater than average nod to keeping the space secure from drones as well.

Kayleigh said, “The only entries appear to be at ground level. A human-sized door on each end and four garage doors on each of the long sides. Pretty basic storage warehouse, at least from the outside. Three stories high…might have a second or third floor in there.”

She looked back over her shoulder, and Diana noted the concern on her face. “You’ll probably find more defenses and alarms inside, of course.”

Diana nodded. “We’ll deal with all that when we get there. Whatever they have, whatever it takes.” She wanted to push her team into action immediately but knew that spending a bit longer watching the place before they did would give them valuable information.

She reluctantly pushed down her desire for motion yet again. The area around the warehouse was busy, unexpectedly so given the hour, with trailer trucks moving in and out on a steady basis.

Cara stepped into the room and reported, “The team’s good to go.” After a glance at the monitors, she continued, “Looks like a popular place.”

Diana frowned. “It is, annoyingly so. Even with a veil, it won’t be easy to sneak up on foot.”

Her second-in-command chuckled. “I have a feeling you’re about to make a decision that will put a smile on Hank’s face.”

She grinned at the other woman, finding at least one positive in the situation.
