Torren

My fists collide with the punching bag. I’ve permitted myself to conjure one that is in Demoriel’s likeness. I have to admit that beating on him, even a mere representation, feels very liberating. I’ve lost track of time, and I have no idea how long I’ve spent in the training room, releasing all of my pent-up energy.

“I’m here for training.” Zéryphine’s soft voice pulls through the violence in my mind.

I wipe my brow with my forearm, only to realize that I’m covered in a thin layer of sweat. With a quick hand gesture, I conjure a towel and dry myself off.

“I don’t think so,” Caspiel cuts in as he walks in behind her.

Zéryphine casts him a warning look that makes me smile. There’s fire inside of the witch. I like it. I’m a big fan of her strength and her confidence.

“If you want.” I motion her forward.

Cas frowns. “She had two visions while we were in the Vaults, and Hecate came in to talk to her. I think what she needs a nice cup of strong tea and a bit of a rest.”

I arch an eyebrow at him. He knows full well that if I have a challenging day, the only thing I want is a bit of quality time to train. It’s not in me to sit with my discomfort. I have to be in a constant state of motion, or things get cloudy in my brain. That’s when I lose control of myself.

“She is standing right here, thanks.” Zee crosses her arms. “In the last twelve hours, I’ve been attacked twice, been brought down to Hell, had two visions, was all but threatened by the Archduchess of Hell, and now I am in hiding with two hot demons who want to bed me. I’d like to punch something. Now.” The last word is a command.

I don’t laugh. I very rarely get the urge to do so, but in that moment, it comes bubbling out of me like it’s been simmering on the edge of my consciousness since I met Zéryphine. Both she and Caspiel are shocked by my laughter.

“Are you okay?” Her lips are slightly parted in concern.

I clear my throat and give them a good nod. “Fine. I’ve just never heard someone speak so fast and with such force. If you want to punch something, come right over.”

Caspiel throws his hands up in defeat. Zee steps forward, and with a flick of her hand and a quick spell, her blue pants disappear, giving way to black ones that seem to be glued to her legs. The curves of her hips and shapely legs are encased in the stretchy material, and her stomach is bare, with only a black sports brassiere covering her delectable top half. She claps her hands together.

“Who are we punching?” She points to Demoriel’s likeness.

“The demon who owns me.”

“Fun.”

I don’t have time to line up for a proper punch or to show her how to stand to avoid injury. Zéryphine walks right up to the training dummy and begins to wail on the thing as if her life depended on it.
