Pressed as I was against Eva, I clearly heard—and felt—her stomach rumbling. Before she could roll over in an attempt to silence it, I pounced. I nuzzled her belly, delighting in the taste of her skin. She tasted like a delicious, satisfied woman.

Correction: she tasted like my delicious, satisfied woman.

Over the last two weeks, one thing had become increasingly clear. I was falling deeper in love with her every day. Those power ballads I’d been belting out all these years? I finally got it.

Fast? Maybe. That didn’t make it any less real. Case in point: my father had proposed to my mother on their third date. He said he just knew, that everything had just clicked into place the first time she smiled at him. That was exactly how I felt.

I wasn’t about to say any of that to Eva yet though. She’d been hurt—pretty badly, from what I guessed—and words weren’t going to cut it. I had to show her and hope that, eventually, she’d come to the same conclusion I had.

“Methinks my lady craves sustenance,” I murmured into her soft flesh.

When I’d come over earlier, it had been with the intent of taking Eva out to the marina for a romantic lunch, just the two of us on the little houseboat I’d rented for the afternoon. But when she answered the door in nothing but a well-worn, oversized concert T, I’d forgotten about all that. I wasn’t complaining. There was no place I’d rather be than in, under, behind, beside, and on top of my angel.

I chanced a glance at the digital clock beside the bed. It was too late for a lunch on the bay, but a twilight dinner at the harbor restaurant was definitely doable.

“I’m fine,” she murmured lazily, her fingers tangling in my hair.

I nipped at her hip bone, making her squirm, and then licked away the sting. “When’s the last time you ate something?”

Eva moaned and moved, giving my head a subtle push southward in quiet demand, accentuating the request with a scratch of nails on my scalp. It served its purpose, distracting me with one of my new favorite things to do until her stomach rumbled again.

I stopped nibbling. “Eva? When was the last time you ate something?”

She mumbled something unintelligible and attempted to turn onto her stomach, but I used my bigger, stronger body to keep her right where she was.

“You’re ignoring me.”

“Am not.”

“Then answer the question.”

She exhaled, a feminine sound of annoyance if I ever heard one. “Jace, if you’re hungry, there’s plenty of leftovers in the fridge. Help yourself.”

I was hungry, and I knew she had to be, even without the physical cues.
