Chapter 26 - Scarlett

Sweetie, can you come see us? We’re in New York till tomorrow night.

I read my mother’s text with a sense of dread and indignation. She had sent it an hour after my appearance with Eli on camera, which was enough time for it to already be buried beneath thousands of notifications from Instagram and hundreds of texts from my friends wishing me well. I watched the screen light up and heard the incessant vibrations, but her message was the only one that mattered.

I could already picture how angry they were at what had happened. “This wasn’t the plan,” my father would say, or something like it. He liked to make everything seem like it had been agreed on, even if it hadn’t. It allowed him to play the victim and get his way at work but, unfortunately, he tended to bring the same schemes into our private lives.

I bit my nails as I thought about the inevitable confrontation when they’d reprimand me for not breaking up with Eli and taking our relationship further into the public spotlight. I looked around the stretch limo we were in. Eli was looking out of the window on the other side of the car and Logan sat a little way away from us nursing a glass of whiskey. A pang of regret gripped me. What have you done? I hadn’t been shy at all. Instead, the minute the stage lights lit up my face, I knew that I preferred to scream what I felt rather than betray my feelings and let my parents talk me out of what I wanted. For better or worse, I thought, the truth needs to come out. What truth? Not now.

I wrestled with myself as my insecurity and the guilt of “betraying” my parents started to prey on my conscience. A few months ago, Eli had been a naughty encounter; a handsome man with a devil in his eye who caught my attention because he was… well… a real man. Unsurprisingly, I had never developed a taste for any of the boys I met at Stanford. From a young age, I had been taught the fragility of my health and, with it, learned some appreciation for my mortality. It wasn’t something I had ever been able to share with any of my classmates. As the saying goes: youth is wasted on the young. No matter how the public saw Eli - the rockstar, the bad boy womanizer - he had always felt like someone who knew, deep down, what was actually important.

“Are you ok?” Logan leaned over and put his hand on my shoulder, looking at me with a curious smile. “You looked like you were a million miles away, and in no place good.” I looked up at his bearded face and I could tell he was speaking softly, wary of interrupting Eli who was brooding so deeply I could almost hear his thoughts rumbling.

“Sure,” I said. “I’m ok. Are we almost there?”

Logan leaned over the other way and knocked on the screen dividing us from the driver.
