Slicing at the harmonious threads with scalpel-sharp precision, my human mind fought to rise to the surface and overthrow the natural order of things. I focused on the feel of the soil beneath my paws, on the wind whisking through my fur, and the comforting presence of a fellow wolf running beside me. And yet, I couldn’t let go completely.

Strands of rationality curling through my mentalscape like a toxic fog marred the world that should have consisted of only sensations and instincts.

Probably sensing something was up, Lotte slowed and gazed at me, her ears set at an inquiring angle. But even as a wolf, I was stubborn. I refused to ruin the final stretch of our run. So, I broke into a sprint, Lotte fast on my heels, and pushed us both harder down the empty paths until traces of humanity trickled into the air.

It was only when the tree line broke up ahead, and the single-story building boasting a cafe on the southern side, came into sight that I dropped down to a trot. For a gorgeous Saturday like today was turning out to be, the crowd was basically nonexistent.

“Sun or shade?” Lotte asked.

I motioned to a sunlit table on the edge of the patio. The only other guests right now were humans, but just in case our conversation ventured into ICRA territory, it was better to be safe than sorry.

The same werewolf who’d led us to the lockers when we’d arrived came to get our order. We both opted for a black coffee and croissant special they had going on, then bathed in the sun and melodies of surrounding nature—excluding the two tables of softly talking humans—until the werewolf delivered the goods.

Lotte snatched a piece of her croissant. “Soooo, Aric Sutter…”

“Is kind of a dick.” I tried to keep my expression deadpan, but even though I was pretty damn pissed Aric had lied to my face yesterday, there were a whole lot of good moments floating around that made it impossible not to smile at least a little. “Okay, he’s not a complete dick, but he disappeared yesterday from the afterparty, then pretended he hadn’t when I confronted him.”

“Yeah, that’s a dick move.” She chewed on the croissant. “Although…
