My first memories all involve music. I remember sitting on the back porch on warm Tennessee evenings, watching the fireflies flicker in and out of the darkness. It was before we moved to Malibu, and things were quieter, simpler. My dad would sit in his old rocking chair, the one my granddad made that had all the paint worn off from sitting in the sun for years. He would be picking out a tune on his guitar if he was working on a song. But most of the time he’d just relax and sing all the old-time country songs he’d heard his father and mother and aunts and uncles and grandparents sing when he was growing up.

I can remember my mom sitting on the porch swing, smiling at my dad, tapping her toes to the rhythm of the music. That was just about the only time I ever saw her sit down and do absolutely nothing. During the day she was always busy, making the beds, mowing the lawn, cooking meals, feeding the horses, making sure the house hummed along in a neat and orderly way.

But at night, when the supper dishes were done, she’d come out onto the porch and listen to my dad’s guitar as the moon rose in the sky, not doing anything, her hands still in her lap, just smiling at us and sometimes humming along.
