Chapter 4

Jett

Damn it to hell, it’s bright in here. Why is it this bright?

Morning. It has to be morning. No. I went to bed in the morning. It was cloudy then.

Fucking afternoon sun.

It’s hours before I have to get to sound check. Why the hell am I awake? Something’s loud. The noise is coming from outside. Christ, they’re jackhammering right beside the damn hotel.

I wince at the sharp pain in my head. It gets worse when I sit up, but I don’t care. Coffee. I need coffee. And something in my stomach. Couldn’t care less what, as long as it doesn’t make me feel worse than I already do.

As if that’s possible.

I check the date. Yeah. Tonight’s our first show in New York.

After two full days and nights of binge drinking and sex, I’m not ready for this.

But I need some fucking coffee. And I need to get out of here. Mostly I want to get out of my own head, and I can’t do that cooped up in this hotel room.

Dragging myself out of bed, I head to the bathroom for a quick shower. It’s all I can do to try to and ignore the memories trying to flood into my mind.

Drinking and fucking randoms took care of that for the last two days. Now the only thing that can do it is music. All my guitars are at the venue already. So that’s where I’m going. Hair still wet, I grab a baseball cap and sunglasses.

All I want is to get going. There’s a line of cabs out in front of the hotel and it’s easier to grab one of them than to mess around with getting a car.

“Where to?” The cabbie doesn’t even look around at me. Good. I don’t want to get recognized by anyone right now.

“MSG. But first, I want to go somewhere to pick up some coffee.”

I pay the driver to get out and get me some coffee. I don’t care about food anymore. While he’s gone, I can’t help but smile in spite of myself.

Tonight we’re playing The Garden. We’re the opening band, but still. This is it. We’ve made it here. Next time, we’ll be headlining.

The driver’s back fast. I like this man. It doesn’t take long to get to the venue either, and I’m not even finished drinking by the time I walk inside.

The darkness feels good. It’s cooler in here. And there’s no-one around.

Perfect.

Once I get to the stage, there’s a handful of guys down at the mixing board, way off near the back of the arena. Too far away for any of us to get in each other’s way.

It’s not hard to locate my guitars. I pick out my favorite. Of course it’s electric, but it’s got a really cool sound when I play it unplugged. It’s got a solid body and it never lets me down.

I sit on the edge of the stage and start playing the first song that comes to mind. It’s an old one, the first one Tailspin ever recorded together.
