Chapter Seventeen

Paradise Pursued

Alex woke from a dreamless sleep. His MeChip told him it was 7:07 a.m. He leaped out of bed, tore the curtains back and looked outside.

Normal. Everything was normal. No strange hydrocars. No sinister figures in the street. No neighbors spitting blood. Nothing untoward at all. Sighing with relief, he closed the curtains and started to dress.

He had done some hard thinking the previous night. Of all the weird experiences he’d had these past few days, Alex decided, yesterday’s was the weirdest. What he’d seen outside John Locke’s shop had petrified him. It had seemed so real. And Locke himself had seemed so sincere, so genuine, in spite of his odd manner.

Nevertheless, Alex was certain he had been right to leave the shop, right to say no to Locke’s appeal for help. The old man was clearly Crazy-Clinton. He might believe what he was saying, but that didn’t mean Alex had to. The whole thing was too farfetched to be true.

He reflected once again on this mysterious man, Dr. John Locke. Alex felt angry the old man had messed with his MeChip. But he also felt strangely sorry for the guy. Clearly, Locke had been somebody back in the day, perhaps someone important. Now, he was obviously suffering from dementia or a mental disorder: a diminished, pathetic figure.

Alex wondered if he should try to get the old man the help he needed. Surely, there was a doctor or a clinic that could do something? After further consideration, however, Alex decided to do nothing. Things had been traumatic enough without going down the rabbit hole again to lend a hand to some eccentric old loon he knew next to nothing about. It was none of his business, he told himself firmly. Time to leave all this weird stuff behind and get back to being a normal teenager.

If he could.
