As we got closer it became clear that the riders were Edward Hodge and his two men. They were a good fifty yards in front of us, riding in our direction. Hodge stopped his big dun horse and his men did the same. The manner in which they stopped on the narrow path gave us the impression they might likely have notions of blocking us from passing.
We pulled to a stop.
âNone other,â Virgil said under his breath.
âWell, well,â Hodge hollered.
Then he pulled a rifle from his scabbard and laid it across his lap.
âDonât look pleasant,â I said.
âNo,â Virgil said, âthey donât.â
Hodge said something to his men and they pulled their rifles and laid them across their laps.
âLook who in the hell we got here,â Hodge said loudly.
Virgil pulled his Winchester and rested it on his saddle horn. I pulled my eight-gauge from its scabbard and turned my horse slightly to the right. Then I put the barrels on the left side of my fork and pulled both hammers back.
Hodge nudged his horse closer. The two men flanking Hodge did the same.
âImagine that,â Hodge said.
We moved closer.
âWhat brings you fellas out this direction?â Hodge said.
âBe a good idea that you boys donât fuck around and get yourselves killed,â Virgil said.
âWe ainât fucking around,â Hodge said.
âGood,â Virgil said.
âBeing out here,â Hodge said, âmakes things a little different, donât it?â
We continued slowly and moved closer yet. The whole time I kept my horse angled to the right.
âHow so?â Virgil said.
Hodge laughed.
âFor starters, the first thing is, there are three of us against two of you.â
âAgainst?â Virgil said.
âGoddamn right, against. You got a problem with that?â
âGot no problem. Fact is you choosing to get yourself and your friends killed or not, is more your problem.â
âListen to mighty Virgil Cole . . . I offered you our help.â
âDonât need any help.â
âI would not be too sure of that.â
âSure enough,â Virgil said.
âThese sumbitches have gone way too far and you know it.â
âI know what I know.â
âWell, thatâs real good,â Hodge said.
âWhatâs the other?â Virgil said.
âWhatâs that?â Hodge said with a sneer.
âYou said for starters, the first thing is, there is three of you and two of us,â Virgil said. âWhatâs the second thing?â
âGood to know you can count,â Hodge said. âThe second thing is we ainât within the town limits. In case you ainât noticed.â
âThere is not much not to notice about you,â Virgil said.
âOh, you think?â
âI do,â Virgil said.
âDonât matter,â Hodge said.
âIt matters,â Virgil said.
Hodge nodded to his rifle but left it lowered.
âGot no rules out here for us to follow, do ya?â
âOh, there are rules,â Virgil said.
Hodge and his men rode closer and we moved closer still. Now we were within pistol distance.
âYour rules?â Hodge said.
Virgil nodded.
âThatâs right.â
Hodge smiled.
âI donât much care for you, Virgil Cole. Or your fucking rules.â
âThatâs okay.â
âYes,â Hodge said. âIt damn sure is.â
âBut youâll do best not to test me,â Virgil said.
âJust funninâ,â Hodge said with a nasty grin, âJust funninâ.â
âThat right?â Virgil said.
Hodge smiled and turned to his men.
âPut your guns away.
