CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Carrie felt as though she’d swallowed a box of cotton balls. She tried to gather enough saliva to lick her lips, but it wasn’t working. Remembering where she was, she kept her eyes closed, saying a silent prayer that whatever they’d done to her had worked. Feeling someone touch her shoulder, she opened her eyes. Oh, God. She was in heaven. She’d died. There was an angel above her, an ethereal angel. Her hair was glowing, framing her face in white light. Her eyes were glowing with swirling rings of silver, blue, aquamarine, and some unnamed color.

“Don’t look at me like some deity, honey,” smiled Gabi. “I cuss more than the devil himself.”

Carrie let out a slow breath, grinning up at Gabi.

“Am I okay?” she croaked. Gabi grabbed the paper cup beside the bed and bent the straw so that she could take a sip from it. She took three sips, nodding at the other woman, then looked up at her again.

“You’re going to be just fine,” she smiled. “Your sister and Ryan have been earning their pay at G.R.I.P. They developed a neurostimulator that we were able to insert in the spine. You’re going to be okay, honey. Dr. Nori said you might even dance again.”

Carrie felt the tears flooding her eyes but didn’t have the energy to cry. She let the salty liquid fall down her cheeks, giving Gabi a little nod.

“I’m going to sit you up,” said Gabi. “You’re going to feel a little discomfort, but it shouldn’t be painful. If it is, tell me immediately, and we’ll lie you back down.”

Carrie nodded again as Gabi slowly moved the electronic bed into place. She felt an intense burning at her lower spine but no real pain to speak of. But the burning had to be good. It was something she didn’t feel before.

Finally sitting up, she looked down at her legs, perhaps thinking they would look different in some way. They still looked like her legs. Long and slender but with muscles.

“Can you wiggle your toes?” asked Gabi.

Carrie stared at her feet, trying to wiggle her toes.

“Don’t think about it,” said Gabi. “Just stretch your feet as if you were dancing. Naturally.”

She nodded, closed her eyes, and stretched her toes downward just as she would do at the beginning of any training or rehearsal. Opening her eyes, she saw that her toes were pointed straight out, and she smiled.

“Good,” smiled Gabi. “Now, with your eyes open. Do it again.”

Carrie did it again, her toes flexing up, then down. Slowly she rotated her ankles, then dared to attempt to bend her knees. It was uncomfortable but not horribly painful. Both legs finally bent, she stared at Gabi, shaking her head.

“You did this,” she cried. “You made it so I could walk again.”

“No, baby, your sister and Ryan did this. I was just the knife wielder,” she said with a wink. “Now, there’s a man that’s been waiting out there for hours to see you. What do you say I go and get him?”

“I think I’d like that,” said Carrie.
