a long way home
Cinderella boarded the carriage and sat. She was out of breath from running. “Please hurry,” she said to the coachman. “Where is the package you kept for me?”
“It is beneath your seat,” he said. “I will go as fast as I can, milady. However I shan’t be able to get you home on time. I fear we will be late in returning no matter how fast we go.”
Cinderella opened the box and set down the shoes…shoe. She only had one shoe. “Oh no,” she said to herself. “The other shoe. Oh but I can’t go back now. Mother will be so disappointed in me.” She started to undo the gown from the back, and then she pulled the other gown over her head before removing the gold and white one. She slid her arms into the sleeves of the blue and green gown, and once she had completely changed her dress she folded up the more glamorous gown and put it into the box. After the dress was taken care of she started to undo the braids in her hair one by one. Her hair looked curly now that the braids were undone and Cinderella wished she had a mirror to see how it looked.
The carriage jolted and Cinderella nearly fell out of her seat. They came to a halt. Cinderella peeked out the window to look at the coachman. “Is everything all right?” she asked.
The coachman sighed. “Forgive me, milady. It appears that one of the wheels has hit a stone and fractured. We may have been going faster than we should have.”
Cinderella closed her eyes. “This can’t be happening,” she whispered. She climbed out of the carriage. “Thank you,” she said. “I will go the rest of the way on foot.”
“On foot? Milady, are you sure?”
“This fracture, it means you cannot continue to take me home in this carriage?”
“That is correct, but if you will wait here I can go and fetch another carriage for you.”
“Thank you sir, but I will walk. I am already late and cannot wait any longer.” She tucked the box under her arm and started to walk down the street toward her home, but it wasn’t long before she realized she’d underestimated how far of a walk it would be. After taking a moment to get her bearings straight, she figured out exactly where she needed to go and decided to cut through a few yards to save time. As she walked through one yard in particular, she passed by the stables belonging to the Grand Duke.
A dog began barking as she passed, and Cinderella clutched the box more tightly. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea, she thought, and she picked up her pace. There was light coming from the stables, so she knew someone was in there, but she really did not want to be seen. She tried to hurry through the field unnoticed, but it didn’t work. A young man came out of the stables holding a lantern and a shovel, and after a quick peek around the area he spotted her.
