Chapter Seventeen

Gemma

One Week Later

I can’t believe that Daniel hasn’t called me. Was the whole contract thing just a way to torture me? Play with me? Was I dumb enough to fall for it? I mean, why else would he keep me waiting this long. He seemed just as twisted up as me, but Dan has all the money, so I don’t have too many ways of putting pressure on him.

There has been some good news, though. Cecil called and said he’d still be using my services. I’ll be able to keep the firm open with the money from him, and there’s even a little extra to start advertising. I’m having Angela only come in two days a week. She expected us to close a lot sooner. I knew she was thinking about quitting, so I told her just to stay part-time until I found someone to replace her, which she thankfully said yes to.

I’ve already got a few potentials coming in soon.

Maybe if Daniel never calls, it could be a good thing. He hasn’t given me any money yet, and my luck has already turned. If a few more people answer the ad, I could get the firm up and running. It would need a lot more luck, but anything is possible, right?

The phone rings, and I get excited. Maybe it’s another client. I answer with my best customer service voice.

“Hello, this is Samuels & Samuels.”

“I know who I’m calling.” I know immediately that it’s Daniel.

“What do you want?” I’m all huffy because he waited so long, but I’m also secretly happy he did call. I really thought he was done with me.

“I want to see you. The contract is ready for you to sign.”

“Okay?”

“Meet me at my office.”

“Right now?”

“Yes, part of being my pet is being at my beck and call.”

There isn’t much I can say to that. I did agree to that part when I said I was going to be his pet.

“Well, I don’t like what your business stands for, and I don’t want to be anywhere near it.” I’m being a little bitchy, but he deserves it for going no contact for a week.

“I guess you don’t want the money for your law firm then?”

“I mean —”

“And you didn’t mean it when you were begging me to fuck your pussy and come in your mouth.”

I choke on nothing but air, shocked that he could so casually say all of that. It makes me instantly wet thinking about what we did in this office last week. This is why I should have been better at hiding my feelings. No duh, Daniel Davies would throw all of it back in my face.

“Okay, I’ll be there,” I whisper.

I don’t know why I’m being so cagey. I’m the only one in the office today.

“I know. And don’t make me wait. Everything will be explained in the contract once you get here.”

“Okay.”

He hangs up before I can say anything more. I’ve always hated it when people have spoken to me like that, but when Daniel does it, I kind of like it — the authoritative tone.
