They disagreed on whether to have chicken or fish. âLetâs get both, then, and take home the leftovers,â Carol said.
âSomeoneâs flush.â
âI did alright.â Carol paused.
âHow alright?â
âIâm aheadââ she stopped a second to consider the pink chip that lay, uncashable, in the bottom of her bag. Of course subtract that, itâs part of your gambling losses, kiddo, a high-priced souvenir. Was that Mollyâs or her own voice? ââ twenty-eight hundred seventy six dollars.â
Z.D. whistled. âYou must have been on fire.â
âThe first night I was up about forty-three hundred, but then I stopped at a couple casinos on the way to Taos and got sloppy.â
âNot too sloppy. Maybe you should quit your day job.â
âYou think?â
âNo,â Z.D. shook her head quickly. âNoâ in fact, I was wondering when you were going to get back to tutoring. You should call up your clients while the semester is youngâ otherwise theyâre going to find new tutors.â
âI guess. But maybe I should take the rest of the year off.â
âItâs not only about making money, honey. I think you need some structure.â
Carol blinked. âLook whoâs suddenly Ms. Responsible.â
âJust looking out for you, thatâs all. Nash is doing a new play over at Theater Rhinoâ The Lesbian Brothers or something. You could always volunteer to usher.â
âThatâs cute.â Carol shook the last remnants of her four-day old headache off, and played with her chopsticks.
âYeah, thatâs me, cute all over.â The waiter came by, and Z.D. ordered onion cakes, fried snapper with bok choy, eggplant, and kung pao chicken, no MSG. âFor someone who came out so far ahead, you donât look very happy. And donât tell me itâs about your mother.â Z.D. put her hands palms down on the table.
Carol took a drink of water. âFlying is very dehydrating.â
âCarol?â
âZ.D. Iââ she looked down at the tablecloth, which had a soy sauce stain to the right of the paper placemat. âHow long have we been together?â
âNine years last summer, but you know that. You never forget an important number. So whatâs up? You have the nine-year itch?â Carol fidgeted with her chopsticks. âShit. Shit, Carol. You do have the fucking itch.â
âI donât think thatâs whyââ
âFuck. You expect me to sit here and eat with you while you calmly tell me that youâre sleeping with someone else? In fucking New Mexico?â
âZ.D. Please keep your voice down.â
âOh, now you want to be all civilized.â
Carol sighed. âIâm not sleeping with someone else. I didââ
âYou did what? Câmon, cough it up.â
âI let myself get picked up. By a dealer.â
âYou fucked some guy?â Z.D. pressed her palms on the table and rose halfway out of her chair, leaning toward Carol.
âDonât be such a sexist, Z.D. Lots of dealers are women.â
âOh, well, in that caseââ Z.D. slumped down, curling her fists into tight balls.
âYou could let me finish.â
âYou could be finished. All right, all right. Go ahead.â Forbearance, isnât that what the nuns say? What the hell is forbearance anyway? Fucking self-control. Youâd think Carol might give it a try.
âThe shuttles had stopped running, and she offered me a ride back to my hotel.
