The plane touches down in Florida mid-morning, and the drive in the rental car toward the address Morgan provided is a blur.

Finally, I arrive.

It’s an abandoned warehouse so far away from the main area of town that it’s basically in a swamp.

I swallow down a lump in my throat.

Because this is bad. Really, really bad. I can’t shake the feeling that I’m about to walk into the set of a horror movie.

I park far enough away that there’s no risk of being heard, then circle around the warehouse, searching for an entrance. A loose window eventually catches my eye, and I pry it open with careful precision. There’s no room for error here.

The smell of sweat, blood, and something metallic fills the air as I slip inside, and I prowl in the direction it’s coming from, going utterly still as I take in the scene before me.

Jax is there, his back to me, and what he’s done makes my stomach turn and my fists clench.

Ruby’s parents, who I recognize from photos, are strapped to rickety wood chairs. The rope cuts into their flesh where it binds their arms and legs, preventing escape, and their faces are twisted in pain. Their eyes are bloodshot and swollen, their hair matted with sweat, blood, and grime. Jax has ripped half their fingernails off, and there are so many tiny cuts on their bodies that it looks like the start of a horrific impressionist painting on their skin.

But, most impressively, even though they’re in pain, they don’t look broken.

The sight before me would make most people sick. Not me. I’ve studied the art of torture. It’s part of our training as Guardians.

It’s a great way to get information out of your enemies when you need it badly enough.

But it’s not being used right now to get information from a soulless vampire, or another enemy who needs to be stopped. It’s being used to get information from Ruby’s very human mom and dad. And I’m going stop Jax from going any further, no matter what it takes.

He paces in front of them, dagger in hand.

“Oh, you’ll talk, Xavier,” he says, his voice dripping with malice. “You’ll admit to the truth about who you are. About what you did that night in the caves.”

Xavier.

I don’t understand.

Ruby’s dad’s name is Kevin.

Xavier is the name of the man who killed my parents and grandmother. I’ve seen Xavier’s picture before. This man isn’t him. He is Kevin. And the woman is Ruby’s mom, Jane.

Has Jax lost his mind?

Kevin’s deep brown eyes are filled with defiance. “Never,” he says, his voice strained but firm.

Jane’s glaring at Jax like she wants to kill him with her bare hands. From the ferocity in her gaze, I might actually believe she could.

As I lurk in the shadows, my mind races, working through scenarios, strategizing my intervention. Rushing in without a plan could be fatal. Not only to me, but also to Ruby’s parents. I need to be smart, precise, and most of all, silent.
