The plane touches down in Florida mid-morning, and the drive in the rental car toward the address Morgan provided is a blur.
Finally, I arrive.
Itâs an abandoned warehouse so far away from the main area of town that itâs basically in a swamp.
I swallow down a lump in my throat.
Because this is bad. Really, really bad. I canât shake the feeling that Iâm about to walk into the set of a horror movie.
I park far enough away that thereâs no risk of being heard, then circle around the warehouse, searching for an entrance. A loose window eventually catches my eye, and I pry it open with careful precision. Thereâs no room for error here.
The smell of sweat, blood, and something metallic fills the air as I slip inside, and I prowl in the direction itâs coming from, going utterly still as I take in the scene before me.
Jax is there, his back to me, and what heâs done makes my stomach turn and my fists clench.
Rubyâs parents, who I recognize from photos, are strapped to rickety wood chairs. The rope cuts into their flesh where it binds their arms and legs, preventing escape, and their faces are twisted in pain. Their eyes are bloodshot and swollen, their hair matted with sweat, blood, and grime. Jax has ripped half their fingernails off, and there are so many tiny cuts on their bodies that it looks like the start of a horrific impressionist painting on their skin.
But, most impressively, even though theyâre in pain, they donât look broken.
The sight before me would make most people sick. Not me. Iâve studied the art of torture. Itâs part of our training as Guardians.
Itâs a great way to get information out of your enemies when you need it badly enough.
But itâs not being used right now to get information from a soulless vampire, or another enemy who needs to be stopped. Itâs being used to get information from Rubyâs very human mom and dad. And Iâm going stop Jax from going any further, no matter what it takes.
He paces in front of them, dagger in hand.
âOh, youâll talk, Xavier,â he says, his voice dripping with malice. âYouâll admit to the truth about who you are. About what you did that night in the caves.â
Xavier.
I donât understand.
Rubyâs dadâs name is Kevin.
Xavier is the name of the man who killed my parents and grandmother. Iâve seen Xavierâs picture before. This man isnât him. He is Kevin. And the woman is Rubyâs mom, Jane.
Has Jax lost his mind?
Kevinâs deep brown eyes are filled with defiance. âNever,â he says, his voice strained but firm.
Janeâs glaring at Jax like she wants to kill him with her bare hands. From the ferocity in her gaze, I might actually believe she could.
As I lurk in the shadows, my mind races, working through scenarios, strategizing my intervention. Rushing in without a plan could be fatal. Not only to me, but also to Rubyâs parents. I need to be smart, precise, and most of all, silent.
