I woke the next morning feeling refreshed and far stronger than I had last night. Lachlan had been right—I’d been nearly dead on my feet.

He’d slept in the room next door, and it’d been impossible not to think of him while I’d been falling asleep.

A knock sounded, and I bolted upright.

It was a reminder that I needed to get my head in the game. Lying around and thinking of the impossibly attractive alpha was the perfect way for me to waste my time and fail.

“Coming!” I called.

“We can meet in the main entry,” Lachlan said through the door.

“All right.” I scrambled out of bed and took the world’s fastest shower, redressing in my old clothes. I found fresh underpants and socks, along with a chocolate bar, sitting at the end of the bed, but no sign of Ralph.

Apparently, my threat to tell Cordelia of his affection for her had worked wonders. If only I could teach him how to bring me a complete change of clothes.

I ate the chocolate bar as I made my way to the main entry. Lachlan waited with a paper bag that smelled fragrantly of eggs and bread, and the candy was soon forgotten.

He handed the bag to me, and I took it gratefully. “Thank you.”

“Glencarrough has a portal that leads to Inverness. We can take it.”

“Perfect.” I pulled out the egg sandwich and bit in, swallowing quickly as my stomach grumbled.

“This way.” He led me out into the courtyard and through the massive gate, cutting across the sloping hills as we headed to an ancient oak tree.

The air in front of it shimmered lightly, marking a portal. I finished my sandwich and shoved the crumpled bag into my pocket.

Lachlan went first, and I followed, letting the ether suck me toward the northern city.

The ether spit us out in a quiet alley. Rubbish bins blocked the exit to the street, and we headed toward them. Lachlan reached them and walked straight through.

An illusion, just like the ones that guarded the Haunted Hound from human Covent Garden. I followed, stepping out onto the beautiful street. Tall stone buildings surrounded me, and I caught the scent of water in the distance. A river.

“Do you know the way to the city square?” I asked.

Lachlan nodded. “This way.”

I followed him through the streets, passing in front of old buildings that gave the city a historic feel. It was primarily a human city, from what I knew, with hidden pockets of supernaturals.

We crossed a bridge over the river and reached the square a few moments later. It was a large grassy space surrounded on all sides by buildings and shops. I spun in a circle, looking for something that could be described as a temple. I wasn’t expecting a truly ancient structure, but a church, at the very least.

Instead, I saw a shopping mall.

“What the hell is that?” I stared at the modern eyesore, shocked.

“That is the south side of the square.”

Frustration seethed through me, along with annoyance. “Why would they build something like that? It’s so modern it doesn’t even fit the rest of the city.
