CHAPTER 4

Kalen hated that it had come to this, but he knew that he wasn’t going to be able to talk Jesenca out of challenging Johain. There were times that he wished she could just be that girl that used to run behind them when they were younger. When she didn’t have so much on her shoulders, and she didn’t have to worry about what her brother was up to.

He watched as she gave orders like a general. He hated that Paquinn was who she turned to for protection for the others. It should be him, but he would never be able to stay back while she was off fighting. They had already had that conversation and she knew where he stood.

Seeing her make pledges with another bothered him. It set his instincts off and made him want to take her in a way only he was allowed, but they didn’t have time to make love for hours and days on end. However, when this was over he was taking her away. He was going to make sure that it was someplace that they could be completely alone. Once there, he was going to keep her naked the whole time. Spend every moment that he could inside her.

One by one everyone left. She stood at the door staring back at him. Her eyes darkened, and he was rock hard. She didn’t even have to look at his cock for him to know exactly what she was thinking.

“Let’s make this quick,” she said not taking a step forward. “There are things that need to be said and then I need to spend the rest of the night connected to you.”

He smiled. “My thoughts exactly.”

She smiled back. “Whatever happens tomorrow you are going to have to let me do this on my own,” she told him. “I know that at some point you are going to want to jump in and protect me but if you do, then you know what will happen.” He did.

If he made a move during a challenge, it would invalidate it and her life would be forfeited. “I would never take that chance.”

“That is easy to say now but what if it looks as if I am going to lose?” she pointed out. “What if Johain says something to me that is disrespectful? That angers you. What would you do then? Because you know that he will try to do whatever he can to get in not only my head but yours as well.”

“I know.”

“If you can’t promise to stay to the side, then you will have to stay here of your own accord, or I will have to order you to stay.” She had never used her alpha power on him. “I don’t want to have to do it, but you did swear yourself to me and that means that I would have the same effect on you as any other member of the pack.”

Anger flared in him at the thought of being anything to her other than her mate.
