He rounded the bend to the ground floor and turned the knob. The sounds washed over him all at once, the shouts of cops, the cries of survivors, and the blaring sirens of the police cars camped outside the place. Sam turned a corner in time for an officer to come rushing his way, pistol lifted and a hard look in the man’s eyes.

“On the ground,” the man shouted. “Police!”

Sam sank down, placing his hands up to signal his surrender, even though little did they know hands-up still allowed him full use of his abilities. The hardass cop eyeballed him something fierce, and a sour frown claimed his face.

“What were you doing back there?” the cop asked, suspicion in his voice.

Sam almost let out a groan—with the distrust rampant in this place to anyone who wasn’t white, they were going to lock and load on the guy of Arabic descent. Because of course, he was their bomber.

“Trying to get away from the blast,” Sam muttered, even though he doubted the guy would listen. After this nightmare, he’d get hauled off for questioning by the cops. The perfect way to cap off all the turbulence rushing through him.

He should’ve kept his mouth shut, but he couldn’t help himself. “Must be the Arab causing problems, am I right?” Bitterness flowed in his tone, and the cop’s features darkened.

“Think you’re funny? There’s a mountain of dead bodies out there and no answers as to who the hell would set bombs off at the Academy.” The cop’s anger over the travesty was the one thing he could agree with.

“Officer,” an all-too-familiar voice came from behind. “He works for me.”

Alanna walked up with a grim look on her face and a badge out. The cop scanned it, his thick caterpillar brows drawing together. A second later, the man heaved a weary sigh and handed the badge back.
