Chapter Thirteen
Claim him yourself. That was all it said, nothing more. I reread the strangerâs note at least a couple dozen times in the past week, hoping that some kind of hidden meaning would magically appear, but I wasnât any closer to finding out what it meant. Who was I supposed to claim? Brayden? Ethan?
Out of the two, Ethan made more sense. After all, how could someone I never met before a week and a half ago possibly know about my feelings for Brayden? If heâd been at the park earlier in the day, there was a good possibility that he saw me and Ethan together. Yes, he had to be talking about Ethan. That was the only answer that made sense. But, why had he attacked Corrine then? Why attack her when she was acting interested in Brayden if he wanted me to claim Ethan? What did he mean by claim anyway?
I pressed my fist to my forehead in frustration. Why did this stranger have to be so confusing? His aggressive actions and lack of a clear motive basically branded him as a werewolf, at least in my mind. He was a lot like Shaun. I couldnât be sure what kind of game he was playing and, if I was right about what he was, I cringed to think of what would happen if I found out too late.
âNow, what are you thinking about?â Brayden questioned, coming over and leaning his elbows against the counter.
I straightened up. âStill trying to make sense of Shaunâs motives. Whatâs his endgame? Why send you these hybrids? That sort of thing.â
Brayden narrowed his eyes, as if he was focusing on something he couldnât quite see clearly. âIt doesnât make sense. None of it. Shaun sending me hybrids. Shaun claiming that Daryl is my father when Angel told me I was a Herne. Jordan and his clan. The stranger in the parkâ¦â His voice trailed off. âI really donât know what to believe anymore.â
I mimicked his position and locked my gaze on his eyes. âI understand how you feel, Bray. I really do. Did Damian ever mention Jordan?â
He shook his head. âIf he had, it wouldâve made this a heck of a lot easier. A lot of things wouldâve made this easier. Sometimes I wonder if Katelyn wouldâve had Gwyneth send me here if there wasnât a possibility of hybrids being involved.â
I shrugged. âDo you think she knew it was hybrids? I mean, I know she suspected but, do you think she knew more than what she said?â
âMaybe, maybe not. With Hunters, itâs hard to tell sometimes. Thereâs only one thing I know for sure right now.â
âWhatâs that?â
He hesitated; eyes trained on the parking lot.
âBrayden, whatâs wrong?â
âPeople are saying things. I think itâs best if we leave soon, before anyone starts trouble.â
âWould Gwyneth even go for that? She wasnât above basically blackmailing you to come here in the first place. Would she really let us leave that easily?â
The hybrid shrugged. âI donât know. Iâm going to call her tonight.
